Beautiful Bridal Hair Ideas For Fine Hair
If you have naturally fine hair, it can often be a bit of a struggle to find bridal hair ideas that are realistic for your hair type. A lot of pictures you see online are on people with a naturally thick head of hair, or they are wearing extensions (and sometimes both). Extensions are always an option but for some people that feels a bit much, so in this blog post I’m going to be sharing some fine bridal hair ideas, along with my expertise as a professional hairstylist specialising in weddings.
I’m worried my hair isn’t going to look nice on my wedding day.
I hear this SO often from my clients with fine hair, and it honestly breaks my heart. As long as you have an experienced hairstylist booked for your wedding day, they will be able to work with any hair type. There are so many things that can be done to make the most of a smaller amount of hair.
I created this textured half up half down on my Mum (you’ll see her featured a lot in this post), she has naturally fine, short hair. We wanted volume and body from this style, so we curled the hair really tightly and used lots of texturising products to get the maximum we could from her natural hair.
Can a bridal updo work on fine hair?
The short answer is, yes! Updos can work really well for fine hair, especially if your hair doesn’t hold a curl - you can have it put up for the day then forget about it.
If you would like an updo that is bigger and more voluminous like this one, the secret weapon is hair padding. Padding is a netted type of material, that can be moulded into shape, pinned to the head and then covered with your hair. Personally I include any hair padding needed within the price for hair bookings.

What if I would rather not wear padding?
Hair padding isn’t always essential, gorgeous styles can be created without it. You just need to be realistic about what can be created with fine hair - as long as you’re happy with a smaller updo, or a bun that isn’t huge then we can often skip the padding.
I created this style on my Mum just using her natural hair - no padding or extensions. As you can see we didn’t get a large bun, but this is what’s realistic for short, fine hair. If your hair is longer, a larger bun would be achievable. Watch how I created it on Instagram or Tiktok.
Do I have to wear extensions if I want my hair down?
You don’t HAVE to, but there are a few things to bear in mind.
Extensions help curls to hold, so if your hair doesn’t hold a curl well they are often recommended.
For certain styles I almost always recommend extensions if you have fine hair (Hollywood waves, I’m looking at you).
You need to be realistic. If you don’t naturally have a lot of hair and you want a really full looking style, your hairstylist can’t magically make your hair thicker without adding extensions.

What difference do extensions make?
If you’re not sure if extensions are right for you, here are some of the benefits of them.
They add a lot of extra thickness and volume to your hair, as well as extra length.
The hair that extensions are made from hold curls really well, and they will support your natural hair and help your curls to hold.
If you’d like a really voluminous updo that’s not achievable with your natural hair and padding, extensions are the way to go.

Do sleek styles work on fine hair?
Absolutely! Sometimes sleek styles can work better on fine hair, especially if your hair is naturally straight. Sleek, modern, more simple looking styles have been a real trend the last couple of years - and if you have fine hair you’ll be pleased to know these styles often really suit your hair type, as it can be hard to get really thick hair contained into these sleeker styles.
Here’s an example of a sleek updo I created on my Mum - she doesn’t have long enough hair to get a proper bun, but if your fine hair is longer, a slicked back bun is 100% an option for you. Watch how I created it on Instagram or Tiktok.
What if my hair is fine and curly?
If you have fine hair with natural curls, the good news is your natural texture is automatically going to give a little more volume and body. There are also ways the hair can be dried and prepped to give it a bit more body.
Padding can be used on curly hair in the same way that it can on straight hair. Curly hair extensions are a little harder to come by, but the curly hair market has exploded in the last few years so options for curly clip ins are becoming more accessible.
